August 22, 2013 Let’s talk about distracted drivers in Las Vegas. We all know how busy our freeways and roads are in Las Vegas. Everyday we go to work and home or school and home or whatever errand you are running we find ourselves in bumper to bumper traffic. We might be traveling down I-15 at 65mph and only have about 20 feet between you and the car in front of you. I know you should have one car length between you and the guy in front of you for every 10mph you are traveling. I don’t know about you but if I allowed that much room between me and the guy in front of me about 3 cars are going to cut in front of me. I personally allow that much room because I’m just not in that big of a hurry. Most people don’t leave near enough room for safe driving and many won’t even let you in if you’re trying to merge over to another lane. A while back Nevada passed laws that forbid the use of your cell phone or texting while driving or sitting at a stop light. While most people have heard of this law I still see many people on their phone or texting while driving. I laugh at the people I see at the stop light trying to be sly and texting with the phone out of sight. If I can see them constantly looking down to their lap and know what they are doing what do they think a trained police officer will think – duh. A little known law that has been around for a while and that is driving while distracted. That means anything that will distract your driving is not legal. I personally have seen people reading a book or news paper, eating a hamburger or pizza, or putting on makeup. I recently saw a guy playing his guitar. But by far the biggest problem is our cell phones. What ever happened to the days of calling someone back after you get to your destination? I have done some calculations on speed and distance. A mile is 5280 feet. If you are traveling 60mph you are going 5280 feet in 60 seconds that’s 88 feet per second. A football field is 300 feet long so according to my calculations you would travel the length of a football field in just under 31/2 seconds. How long would it take you to quickly look at your phone and see who called or texted you? Basically in the blink of an eye you have traveled the length of a football field. How scary is that? Maybe it’s time to put our phones away while in our cars and pay attention to the road. Maybe it’s time to slow down a little and take the time to eat at home instead of in the car. Maybe it’s time to put on your makeup or read that good book at home. Maybe it’s time to slow down and smell the roses. Most of all let’s all slow down and save a life. Remember the life you save could be yours!
