Las Vegas, NV
The city of Las Vegas, NV, operates as an internationally famous resort city known for its gambling, entertainment and nightlife. Spanish for “The Meadows,” Las Vegas is the most populated city in Nevada, as well as the seat of Clark County. The city itself houses a full-time population of roughly 650,000 people, while more than 2.2 million inhabit the entire urban Las Vegas area.
Las Vegas was founded in 1905, then incorporated as a city in 1911. Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931, and construction on nearby Hoover Dam brought an influx of workers to the area. After World War II, lavish hotels, glittering casinos and big-name entertainment came to dominate Las Vegas. To this day, with architecture that has exploded over the past few decades, the city’s major attractions remain the casinos and the hotels, which in turn fuel the restaurant and retail industries.
